How minoxidil works — and why it isn't the only lever
Minoxidil is a vasodilator that extends the growing phase of the hair cycle. It doesn't address DHT, the androgen behind most pattern thinning. Finasteride does target DHT — by blocking Type II 5-alpha-reductase — but systemically, which is where its side-effect profile comes from. Between “vasodilator drug” and “systemic hormone blocker” there's a lot of biological room for drug-free approaches.
The drug-free levers that have data
- Verbascoside (from lilac stem cell) inhibits both Type I and Type II 5-alpha-reductase — addressing DHT topically and nutritionally rather than systemically. Full science here.
- Biotinyl-GHK peptide stimulates hair-matrix activity at concentrations 10–30× lower than minoxidil requires, and increases hair-shaft diameter.
- Peptide + antioxidant support (Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3, ergothioneine) reinforces follicle anchoring and defends against the oxidative stress that ages follicles.
