Weight-Loss & Stress Hair Loss

Hair that comes out in handfuls two to three months after a stressful event — rapid weight loss, surgery, illness, bereavement, or a period of sustained stress. Clinically this is telogen effluvium: a shock pushes an unusually large share of follicles out of the growing phase all at once, and the shedding arrives months later, long after the trigger has passed.

Rapid weight loss is one of the most common triggers, because hair is among the first tissues the body deprioritises when intake drops. That includes weight loss on GLP-1 medications — a 2026 study in The BMJ reported higher rates of alopecia among GLP-1 users than among comparable patients, and the FDA now lists alopecia in the labelling for several of these medicines.

The good news is that telogen effluvium is usually temporary. What hair needs during the recovery window is raw material: protein, biotin, and the amino acids follicles use to build keratin — exactly what is in short supply during a calorie deficit.

MD Hair™ is a drug-free supplement and topical range, not a treatment for medication side effects. It supplies nutrients hair is built from during a period when dietary intake is often reduced. If shedding is heavy or persists beyond six months, see a physician — it may not be telogen effluvium.
