A physician first
Dr. Susan Lin, M.D. is the founder and CEO of La Canada Ventures, Inc. and the physician-formulator behind the MD® family of brands. She completed Boston University School of Medicine's six-year accelerated B.A./M.D. program as an NIH Scholarship recipient, and is board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and in Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M), with more than 35 years of clinical practice in the San Francisco Bay Area. She has served as an Expert Reviewer for the Medical Board of California since 2004 and formerly sat on the MIT McGovern Institute Strategic Board.
Why hair — and why drug-free
Decades of treating women through pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and menopause gave Dr. Lin a front-row view of hormonal hair loss — and of how few safe, drug-free options her patients had. In 2008 she launched her first physician-formulated product and published the first peer-reviewed ocular safety study in its category (Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy, 2008; PMID 18569264) — making MD® an original in physician-formulated beauty, the same vintage as the category's founding brands, not a follower.
The inventor behind the formulas
Dr. Lin is the named inventor on an international patent portfolio covering hair growth and eyelash enhancement compositions, including US Patent 8,206,695, US 20100249043 — Compositions and Methods for Promoting Hair Growth, and counterpart filings across WIPO (WO 2010110863-A2), China, Korea, and Hong Kong. Her published clinical work spans female hair loss (The National Hair & Skin Journal, 2012), stem-cell hair regeneration (The Link — American Hair Loss Council, 2013), and drug-free hair loss treatment (Euro Cosmetics, 2017).
Recognition
Dr. Lin was appointed to the U.S. Commercial Service District Export Council for Northern California and received the U.S. Department of Commerce Export Excellence Award; her story has been featured by the International Trade Administration. Company honors include ICMAD Cosmetic Innovator of the Year (2008) and Cosmopolitan Best of the Best 2023 and 2024.
